Since the 1990s, experimental practices in the natural sciences have changed significantly due to the introduction of information technologies. In the last decade, this trend has been complemented by the development of artificial intelligence (AI) methods. In the literature, these processes are described in terms of digitalization, datafication, and the transition to digital science (e-Science). It is often claimed that we are witnessing a radical “paradigm shift” from model-driven to data-driven or data-intensive science, and from experimental to computational approaches. Yet these assertions rarely draw on empirical research into actual laboratory practices and the role of computation in the production of scientific knowledge.
In his presentation, which will take place on March 13, 6 PM (GMT+4), Andrei Kuznetsov will present findings from ethnographic studies of two Russia-based laboratories in chemoinformatics and thermal physics to address the following questions:
• How are computational approaches, particularly AI, empirically introduced into the work of laboratory sciences?
• How do the experimental and computational practices interrelate in this process?
• How can classic laboratory ethnographies in science and technology studies (STS) help us understand these changes without falling prey to AI hype discourse?
Where is it happening?
