Community Vigil For Lives Lost to Traffic Violence on MLK South

In the last few years, we have lost 5 of our neighbors to traffic violence on MLK South from 9th ave S to 30th ave South. Just this summer, the lives of two women were taken. We will gather as a community for a moment of silence and a moment of prayer.
After the vigil, there will be a call to action. We know that these deaths were preventable. MLK South is a known "high injury network" street. It is known for motorists speeding well over the speed limit and driving recklessly. It sees a disproportionate number of crashes compared to MLK North. We plan to honor the lives of these neighbors by taking action and asking the City of St Pete for expedited funding to bring safety to this stretch of road. There will be an upcoming community meeting where we plan together how to do this. We know we can make it safer because MLK north was redesigned in 2018 and saw a dramatic drop in crashes. The Southside deserves funding, just like other parts of St Pete.
