Community Open Day: Discover Centre of the Earth & Youth-Led Conservation

Join us for a free, drop-in Community Open Day at Centre of the Earth in Winson Green, Birmingham.

Spend time exploring this unique urban nature site, meet the team behind the Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust, and learn more about our work, including future opportunities for youth-led conservation, volunteering and careers in nature.

This relaxed open day is for local communities, young people, families, and anyone curious about nature in the city.

There’s no need to commit to the whole 2 hours, drop in when you like, enjoy a hot drink, and explore at your own pace.

What’s on the day?

  • Explore Centre of the Earth, our hidden urban green space
  • Learn about local wildlife, habitats and conservation work
  • Find out about Youth Pathways and upcoming opportunities for young people
  • Chat to staff and young conservationists about routes into environmental careers
  • Join in with an optional craft activity
  • Enjoy hot drinks and light refreshments
  • A welcoming, informal space to ask questions and get involved

Who is it for?

This event is open to:

  • Local residents and community members
  • Young people interested in nature, climate action or conservation
  • Students and early-career environmentalists
  • Families and individuals looking to learn more about local green spaces

No experience or prior knowledge is needed — just curiosity!

Youth Pathways

This Community Open Day is part of our wider Youth Pathways Programme — an accessible and inclusive initiative supporting young people (16–25) to build skills, confidence and experience in conservation and environmental action.

We’re especially keen to connect with young people who are underrepresented in the environmental sector, and to share how they can shape and lead the future of urban conservation in Birmingham and the Black Country.

Important Info

  • Free to attend
  • Drop-in event – come along at any time between 11am and pm.
  • Hot drinks and light refreshments provided
  • Please wear suitable footwear for walking outdoors
  • Unfortunately while our indoor spaces are wheelchair accessible; the majority of the outdoor areas have uneven ground unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Come along, meet new people, and be part of reimagining what urban conservation can look like, rooted in community, inclusion and youth leadership.
