Community Lecture by Alice Taylor-Colbert

"Cherokee Arts & Crafts" by historian, Alice Taylor-Colbert, will be a community lecture held in January 2026 in the reception hall. This lecture will focus on Cherokee history, culture, and the transformation of objects to modern arts and crafts.

Biography: Alice Taylor-Colbert earned Masters’ and Ph.D. degrees in American Studies from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She is an American historian with a focus on the South and Cherokee Studies who served 5 universities in leadership roles from 1984 to 2019. She is also a curator and archivist who served as Director of the Museum and Archives at one institution and Supervisor of a Historic Site at another. Her humanities consulting work for South Carolina Humanities from 2019-2025 included securing grants for programming and exhibit projects that she then directed from funders including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Self Family Foundation, and others. Dr. Taylor-Colbert served on the editorial board of the Journal of Cherokee Studies from 1988 to 2020. Her collecting of Cherokee Arts and Crafts began in 1988 and continues. She had a showing at the Harris Art Center in Calhoun, Georgia in 2024 and is happy to have a few pieces on display at The Arts Center of Greenwood. Professionally, Taylor-Colbert serves as an adviser to the Georgia Trail of Tears Association and as a member of the Professional Development Committee of the South Carolina Federation of Museums. ​Alice is now an independent history and museum consultant whose specializes in strategic planning, development, and historical research. She is also a member of the SC Humanities Speakers Bureau.
