The photos and videos of community birth (birth at home, in a birth center or birth suite) are often beautiful. With soft music, a large pool of water and dreamy lighting it may seem almost too good to be true. How accurate are these images? Is that what community birth is really like?
As a licensed midwife, I can tell you that community birth is a wonderful option for many families! They can move around as much as they want, eat and drink whatever they’d like, surround themselves with the people who can best support them, and give birth the way they want. But not surprisingly, real community birth doesn’t always fit the formula we see on social media. It is raw, powerful, and often noisy. Sometimes it goes just how we imagine. Sometimes nothing goes to plan, but it is still wondrous!
Are you curious about community birth? Whether you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, or you just want to know more about what happens when people work with a licensed midwife, you are welcome! Many people have questions about the safety, logistics and real life experience of giving birth outside of the hospital. (Not to mention the mess!) Please join us for an afternoon of community birth stories from our previous clients.
