Common Ground: Processing Wild Clay with Abbie Fowler
About this Event
Learn how to process local Manchester clay with artist Abbie Fowler. This will be a friendly workshop to learn about wild clay and practice handbuilding techniques, based on those used during the making of the work in Common Ground.
During the workshop we will spend the first hour processing the raw material, learning about the properties and minerals that make up this wonderful clay body. Focusing on the first stage of processing: drying, soaking and mixing. Then in the second half of the workshop we will practice handbuilding techniques using the same clay processed by Abbie in the weeks prior to explore the tactility of the material by sculpting pieces similar to those made in Common Ground.
The clay will then be recycled to highlight the renewable beauty of the process, but there will be a polaroid camera so you can take home a polaroid picture of any creations you make in the workshop.
All equipment will be provided in the workshop, please book onto the session in advance to confirm your place.
About the Exhibition:
Common Ground brings together three artists and designers – Abbie Fowler, Freya Boothroyd and Joab Harrison – with the aim of connecting people with nature during the global climate emergency. They have been collaborating and developing this body of work since January 2025 where they hope to translate the tactile experience of the landscape through materiality, sculpture and abstraction.
This workshop will take place in Space2, located on the ground floor of Manchester Craft and Design Centre.
