Colours of Amoy Street: A Guided Heritage & Colouring Experience

Colours of Amoy Street: A Guided Heritage & Colouring Experience
When was the last time you really noticed a shophouse?
Singapore’s Central Business District is often associated with glass towers, offices, and the rush of workday crowds. But around Amoy Street and Telok Ayer, modern buildings sit alongside richly detailed shophouses — a reminder that the city’s present and past are layered closely together.
Before this area became part of the CBD, Telok Ayer was close to Singapore’s old seafront — a place where many early migrants arrived by sea and first stepped into Singapore.
Around this old shoreline, communities grew. People worked, traded, worshipped, started schools, and built lives here. The shophouses around Amoy Street are part of that larger story.
In this guided heritage and colouring workshop, you will be invited to explore and reconnect with Singapore’s shophouse heritage through history, observation, and hands-on creative expression.
Through the simple process of learning, observing, and colouring, you may begin to see familiar shophouses with a renewed sense of attention and appreciation.
The Experience
- Part 1: The session will start with an introduction on the history of Amoy Street shophouses and the wider Telok Ayer historic district, including the details that make these buildings distinctive.
- Part 2: We will then move into a gently guided colouring session using a custom-designed shophouse illustration created specially for this workshop. You may colour it based on what you have learnt, or use it as a starting point for your own creative interpretation.
All materials will be provided, including a custom-designed shophouse illustration printed on thick cardstock, premium colouring materials, and a protective sleeve for your completed artwork.
Each participant will also receive a Mindscape voucher for your next creative moment.
Why colouring?
Colouring gives us a reason to slow down. It is a gentle and accessible activity, even if you do not usually make art. The act of choosing colours and filling in spaces helps us pay closer attention to details we may otherwise have missed.
When we colour a shophouse, we do not just see a building. We begin to notice its unique features — the shape of the windows, the five-foot way, the tiles, and the decorative details on the façade.
The aim is not to create a perfect artwork, but to leave with a deeper appreciation of Singapore’s built heritage — and a finished piece you can feel happy taking home.
A glimpse of the experience
Here are some moments from past Mindscape creative sessions. For this workshop, participants will be working on a new custom-designed illustration inspired by Amoy Street. Photos from past sessions have also been included below.
