A Practical Briefing for Lenders and Business Advisors. A professional development session on equipment value & collateral risk
About this Event

Event Summary

Commercial lending and business advisory files often rely on machinery, equipment, and asset values — but the meaning of “value” can change dramatically depending on whether a business is operating, being sold, refinancing, liquidating, or closing.

This practical briefing is designed for commercial lenders, credit union lenders, CBDC/BDC professionals, accountants, lawyers, business brokers, insolvency professionals, and other advisors who work with privately held businesses.

Participants will learn how to recognize common collateral-value risks, understand the difference between key appraisal value definitions, and identify when an independent appraisal can help protect a financing or advisory file.

Main Description

In many small business financing and transition files, equipment value is treated as though it is easy to know.

A borrower provides a list.
A seller assigns values.
A buyer assumes the equipment supports the loan.
A lender needs to understand what the collateral may really be worth.

But equipment value depends on context.

Is the business operating or closed?
Is the equipment installed or movable?
Is there a real secondary market?
Is the value being used for financing, acquisition, refinancing, workout, liquidation, or goodwill separation?

Outside guarantors such as government agencies may have specific rules or definitions that must be adhered to.

This briefing will give lenders and advisors a practical framework for understanding machinery and equipment value before a file becomes difficult.

The session will include real-world case examples involving missing assets, fast liquidation, franchise resales, specialized equipment, inflation, historical appraisals, and the difference between business value and equipment value.

This is a professional development session, not a technical appraisal course. It is intended to help lenders and advisors ask better questions, recognize warning signs earlier, and understand when an independent appraisal may be useful.
