About this Event
Ramadan Mubarak! Please join us for our 5th Annual Community Iftar! Iftar is the name of the meal Muslims eat to break their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan, and it is usually a time that Muslims spend with loved ones and community. Ramadan is also a time of charitable giving, and we'd love to invite you for a meal! A halal/ingredient kosher dinner will be provided by Codetta Bake Shop!
If you are not Muslim or observing Ramadan, you are MORE than welcome to come! We invite you to try fasting for the day to get an idea of what the experience is like. If you're interested, here's some details/instructions:
1 . The fast is from dawn (about 6:00 AM on Mar. 15) until sunset (about 7:15 PM on Mar. 15). This means between these times, you must abstain from the following for your fast to be valid: food, drink (yes, even water!), smoking, sex, anger, and general negative emotions/interactions/influences. The idea is to become more mindful of yourself (and your spirituality) and gain control of your physical impulses by practicing restraint on all these things that we usually engage in so carelessly. The Ramadan fast is seen by many Muslims as a "reset" or a "cleansing" because it strengthens our discipline and helps us to focus more on our spiritual growth rather than physical needs.
2 . Preparation is key! Part of the fast for Muslims includes waking up BEFORE dawn to eat a meal (suhoor) to sustain ourselves throughout the day of fasting. Personally I find the most challenging part of fasting to be the thirst - so be sure to HYDRATE in the days before your fast! When Sunday comes along, plan to wake up around 4 AM and eat foods that are rich in protein and complex carbs (e.g. eggs/beans/meat, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, nuts, etc.) and drink LOTS of water!
3 . You can feel free to go back to sleep after suhoor, and then go about your day as usual. You might find you are more productive since you aren't thinking about/planning/going to get/eating food. Try to gain as much out of this experience as possible!
4 . When you come to the Codetta iftar, we'll break our fast with something light (e.g. fruit and water), and then there's a brief congregational prayer (Maghrib) before dinner will be served. If you're not praying you're more than welcome to stay and observe the prayer if you'd like - just please be respectful!
5 . Since I've been getting this question a lot, I figured I'd address it here! There's no particular dress code for this event, so no need to cover your hair in hijab. That being said, please wear modest and comfortable clothing!
Please RSVP if you plan to attend - space is LIMITED!
Looking forward to seeing you there! Ramadan Mubarak!
