Coastlines: writing, reading, and public engagement on the UK coast.

How can literature and creative writing - through practice, or through public engagement - celebrate the richness of the UK coastline and its communities, while addressing the challenges faced by coastal locations and the people who live there?

This symposium and networking event brings together academics, writers, and public organisations to consider how arts and culture might meaningfully engage with the coast. How do we use literature and creative writing to listen to – and share knowledge with – those who live in coastal towns and cities? How can writers address the challenges faced by some coastal communities, such as high levels of deprivation, environmental degradation, and poor health outcomes?

We will hear from writers and academics who have designed public engagement projects in coastal towns. We'll listen to community groups and charities related to the UK coast. And by thinking together at this event, we hope to generate ideas for coastal collaborations and relationships between writers, academics, and public partners.
