CMC Club Night – Adventures in Tusheti
Join us on Thursday 20 August for an evening of exploration, history and adventure as Paul shares stories from his recent journey into the remote Tusheti region of Georgia, at the eastern end of the Caucasus.
"I will talk about my exploration in June 2026 of the mountains bordering the remote Tusheti region of Georgia, at the eastern end of the Caucasus. Tusheti has been somewhat rediscovered over the last twenty years thanks to an improved access road, and now attracts a following for hiking and horse tours. Yet so far its mountaineering potential has been ignored. All sources point to the 1892 exploits of Bavarian Gottfriend Merzbacher. Yes really, 134 years ago.
I will draw some contrast with my visit to neighbouring Dagestan in 1992, a mere 34 years ago. That trip was in a group of seven and involved lots of travel logistics and heavy supplies. This time, I travelled solo and planned short, lightweight forays from a vehicle-accessed guesthouse in a stunning ancient village with hot showers and Wi-Fi. An easy trip for an ageing climber. Needless to say, the adventures that transpired involved quite a bit more effort than planned…"
