Depending on who you ask, the phenomenon of “cancel culture” is a way for the general public to hold the powerful accountable—a panopticon for the digital age, ready to cast judgment on any of us for the slightest infraction—or a convenient scapegoat for terrible people eager to paint themselves as martyrs.
Online, it has meant everything from Twitter’s removal of Trump to Jenna Marbles’ self-expulsion from YouTube and allegations of sexual assault against one of David Dobrik’s friends.
But what actually happens when someone gets “canceled” now? Do they really lose their audience? What warrants a comeback and what does that look like IRL?
