About this Event

A powerful chronicle about memory, power and silence. In Presentes, by Paco Cerdà, the Spanish post-war period is revealed through an episode as symbolic as it is disturbing: the transfer of José Antonio Primo de Rivera's body from Alicante to El Escorial.

For eleven days, a monumental procession travels almost five hundred kilometres amid ceremonies, propaganda and fascist salutes, attempting to construct the founding myth of Francisco Franco's new Spain. But while the regime builds its heroic narrative, another story unfolds in the shadows: that of thousands of lives marked by repression, exile, fear and oblivion.

Through a combination of voices and scenes, the novel sheds light on those days in 1939 when the country was beginning to rebuild itself... while one memory was imposed and another was buried.

To get the most out of this activity, we recommend reading the book in the original language. Please note the book club takes place in Spanish (although English speakers are also welcome).
