KILLEEN, Texas — The fourth annual Clothed With Compassion free clothing giveaway will take place Saturday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1410 S. 2nd St. in Killeen.
The community-wide event provides free gently used clothing, coats and shoes to individuals and families throughout Central Texas. Organizers say thousands of clothing items are distributed each year, helping hundreds of community members prepare for school, work and daily life.
“Everyone is welcome,” organizers said. “Come and take what you need at no cost.”
In preparation for the event, volunteers are collecting clean, gently used clothing donations. New socks and underwear in unopened packages are especially needed. Community members, churches, youth groups and civic organizations are also invited to volunteer with event setup, cleanup and service during the giveaway.
This year’s effort will also benefit several local nonprofit and community organizations through targeted donations. Clothing in poor condition will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House for textile recycling, with proceeds supporting families receiving care. Additional donations will support Families in Crisis, local homeless outreach efforts through the Killeen Police Department, Kids Closet, and the women’s prison system, which has requested women’s pants in sizes 12-16.
Organizers plan to host a special appreciation brunch prior to the event for representatives from participating community organizations as a way to strengthen partnerships and identify future opportunities to serve.
The annual giveaway has become known not only for meeting practical needs, but also for bringing together volunteers from across the community.
Reflecting on last year’s event, volunteer Jonah Hoemke of Copperas Cove said he was surprised by the diversity of those who attended and the simple ways volunteers could make a difference.
“There were people from all walks of life,” Hoemke said. “I got to meet so many people and learn so many names. It reminded me that we are all children of God.”
Missionaries who served at last year’s event described witnessing countless expressions of gratitude from families receiving clothing.
“We were able to talk to so many individuals and families, help teens and kids find clothes for school, and even bear our testimonies about God’s timing,” Sister Reynolds and Sister Johnston wrote. “The amount of smiles on people’s faces could not be counted.”
Organizers hope this year’s event will continue to strengthen community connections while providing practical assistance to those in need.
