Join us for an engaging CLE session with our incredible guest speaker Lynda C. Shely, a renowned Legal Ethics and ABS Lawyer. This program qualifies for 1.0 CLE credit. Lynda and I will be discussing:


"Ethical Implications of Artificial Intelligence in Legal Practice: Technology Competence and Risk Management"


Can lawyers safely use ChatGPT, Copilot, CoCounsel, Zoom AI Companion, Firefly, or other AI tools? What ethical pitfalls should firms anticipate, including with clients using AI? This CLE unpacks the ethical, technological, and practical implications of AI adoption in law firms, offering actionable guidance for policy creation, using AI effectively to improve efficiency and reduce costs, while assuring risk management, data privacy, and client protection.

What to Learn:

  • Learn what should be in fee agreements regarding client use of generative AI
  • How to avoid sanctions/discipline for AI hallucinations
  • Cautions to consider when using any open source AI systems
  • Recent court restrictions on lawyer use of AI
  • How to effectively use appropriate AI tools in your law firm

About the Speaker

Lynda C. Shely, is of-counsel to Rosing, Pott & Strohbehn (RPS) where she provided legal ethics and Alternative Business Structure (ABS) law firm regulatory advice to lawyers and law firms. Lynda was the 2020 – 2023 chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, an Arizona Delegate in the ABA House of Delegates, and currently volunteers with several other nonbillable groups involved in legal ethics matters, including as a member of the Arizona Supreme Court’s Alternative Business Structures Committee, the Arizona Supreme Court’s Steering Committee on AI and the Courts, the ABA Standing Committee on Professional Regulation, and the State Bar of Arizona Ethics Advisory Group.

She is a past president of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, the National ABS Law Firm Association, and the Scottsdale Bar Association and has been an adjunct professor at all Arizona law schools, teaching professional responsibility. Before joining RPS she had her own solo practice for 21 years. Prior to opening her own firm, she was the Director of Lawyer Ethics for the State Bar of Arizona. Lynda started out as an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Washington, DC.

Lynda received her BA from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and her JD from Catholic University in Washington, DC. She has received several awards for her contributions to the legal profession including most recently the 2022 Maricopa County Bar Association Member of the Year Award, the 2023 Maricopa County Bar Hall of Fame, and the 2024 Arizona Women Lawyers’ Association Sarah Herring Sorin Award.
