Be among the first to explore the Heard Museum’s newest exhibition with Curator Roshii Montaño (Diné)!This 30-minute talk offers fresh insight into October Art: The Collection of Delores Browne Abelson, a remarkable collection assembled by Delores Browne Abelson—a pioneering figure in dance, arts education, and advocacy—whose discerning eye brought together works by some of the most celebrated Native artists of her time. At the heart of the exhibition is the work of Abelson’s close friend Harry Fonseca (Nisenan Maidu/Portuguese/Native Hawaiian), presented alongside works by other contemporary Native artists. In 1984, Abelson founded October Art, a New York gallery dedicated to showcasing the work of Native artists, many of whom are represented in this collection:
- Gwen Tafoya (Santa Clara Pueblo, b. 1966)
- Stella Charvarria (Santa Clara Pueblo, b. 1939)
- Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980), Julian - Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1879-1943)
- Gloria Garcia “GoldenRod” (Santa Clara Pueblo, b. 1942)
- Sharon Naranjo Garcia (Santa Clara Pueblo, b. 1951)
- Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994)
- Harry Fonseca (Nisenan Maidu, 1946-2006)
- Dan Namingha (Hopi, b. 1950)
- Hazel Koyiyumptewa (Hopi, 1914-1992)
Whether you are drawn by your love of dance, intrigued by Fonseca’s art, or simply eager to see these works in a new light, this is a special opportunity to experience the exhibition with the curator who brought it to the gallery walls.
