This is a blending of cultural needlework techniques – a little bit of Sashiko, and a little bit of Boro. Sashiko is a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique that creates motifs and all-over patterns with bold, visible stitches. Boro is a distant cousin – a rustic technique for repairing and extending the usefulness of utilitarian textiles. In this class, students will start by stitching one or more small Japanese Komon motifs of their choice with Sashiko, using a design sheet provided, and then collaging them as patches with other fabrics into a hand-stitched Boro sampler. The result is a small project that combines the elegant beauty of Sashiko with the primitive appeal of Boro. The project can be used as a decorative wall quilt, a table mat, or a runner.
If you don't have patience for the precisely stitched Sashiko, come and play with just the Boro. If Boro is too rustic for your taste, you are welcome to come indulge in some pure Sashiko. Or do as I did and enjoy a little of both. There is no kit for this class, but I will bring plenty of interesting scraps for the Boro to share.
