Pen & Ink Hatching and Ink Washes - Landscape: Plein Air at Sinking Pondswith Artist, Jennifer Koury
1-Day Workshop
Thursday, June 25th from 9:30am-1:30pm
Drawing and painting outside, often called “plein air” is an exhilarating experience shaped by shifting lighting conditions, the natural rhythms of wind, fluttering leaves and flying birds. Participants will be inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s exquisite pen and ink landscapes and explore techniques in the unique setting of Sinking Ponds, in East Aurora, NY. The day will begin with an instructor guided demonstration of pen and ink line sensitivity, and hatching techniques, combined with diluted ink washes to create depth. Students will then develop a landscape composition of their choice while receiving personalized guidance from the instructor as you work outdoors.
All supplies are included in the class. Students will take home a pen, ink nib, bottle of ink, brush and 5 sheets of paper. Students are encouraged to bring additional materials if they would like. Students are also asked to bring a chair and a hard surface to work on; drawing board, TV tray or the like. Please feel free to bring a beverage or snacks. If it rains, the class will meet in the Castiglia Art Center in the Print Shop of the Roycroft Campus.
Jennifer Koury is a Buffalo-based artist, freelance illustrator, and arts educator. She holds degrees in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and Illustration from Art Center College of Design, California and she has been teaching at various Art Centers around the area.
Koury is represented by Meibohm Fine Arts, East Aurora, NY. She has exhibited her paintings in both solo and group shows around the region, and won awards, including being finalist in the Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art. Her art is featured in the NFWS Mary Whyte Gallery Walk video, George Washington's Mount Vernon Visitor Center in Virginia, and Yuma Regional Medical Center in Arizona, and her illustrations have appeared in many children's books. She is a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, and a signature member of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society.
