1-day workshop
Saturday, August 8th from 10:00am-5:00pm
A linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface that was popularized by Picasso and used by Roycrofters in the early 20th century. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge. The raised areas are then inked and pressed on paper to create a print. In this class, students will learn a brief history of linocut, how it’s still very much in use today by print artists and see examples of linocuts and prints. design or choose from a design, carve, and print their own linocut. Students should bring a 4” x 6” design that will take about 3 hours to carve or use one of the available templates.
All supplies, such as carving tools, linoblocks, ink, paper, are included for this class. Cutting tools and printing equipment will be provided by and remain property of the Roycroft Print Shop. Paper will be supplied for up to ten prints per person. You are welcome to bring your own paper if it is certified for block printing. Carving takes some endurance and uses sharp tools and is therefore appropriate for ages 16 and up. We encourage you to bring snacks, beverages or a bagged lunch. There will be a 1-hour lunch break. You are also welcome to bring your own linocut tools and knife-cutting gloves. Students will leave with their own carved block along with copies of their single-colored print.

The class will be taught by Cameron Anderson, who began his letterpress journey here at the Roycroft Campus. He found himself so excited by letterpress printing that he started his own print shop that he and his partner Caren Calamita run out of their dining room in Rochester, NY. Along with a genuine excitement for letterpress printing, he brings with him decades of experience in web development, which has its roots in letterpress.
