with Cameron Anderson & Caren Calamita
1-day workshop
Saturday, January 17th from 10:00am-5:00pm
In this introductory workshop, students will learn the basics of letterpress printing using the same methods and techniques that were used when The Roycroft published pamphlets and books. A brief history of moveable type and printing vocabulary will be taught so that students will be able to identify components of type, platen presses, and the tools used to prepare a form for printing. Participants will take a quote of their choosing and learn how to hand set type on a composing stick, transfer it to a chase, and lock up their form for printing. The prepared form will then be locked into the press so that multiple prints can be made. After printing, the form will be disassembled and type redistributed back into their cases. Please feel free to bring a bagged lunch or something to snack on.
Supplies include all materials needed to make multiple copies of their typeset quote. The tools provided during the class project; type, chase, etc. will remain the property of the Roycroft Campus. Students are asked to bring a quote of no more than two lines to the class or choose from a variety of Hubbard quotes. Please come dressed appropriately to work with permanent inks and mineral spirits (some shop aprons will be available).
Cameron and Caren began their letterpress journey here at the Roycroft Campus and found themselves so excited by letterpress printing that they have started their own print shop. Along with a genuine excitement for letterpress printing, they bring with them decades of experience with web development and education. They can’t wait to share their excitement about letterpress with others.
