Event Details
When: September 5th, 2026 | 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Where: Railroaders Memorial Museum, 1200 9th Ave Altoona, PA 16602
The year is 1863. As General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army advances deep into Pennsylvania, a sudden wave of panic grips Altoona. Fear mounts that the invasion force will strike our city to destroy the vital Pennsylvania Railroad Shops—the essential backbone of the Union’s war effort.
To bring this high-stakes moment in our local history to life, we are host to a full Civil War reenactment group setting up an authentic military base camp on our grounds.
What to Expect
Explore the Base Camp: Roam the yard and step inside an interactive 1863 encampment. Chat with reenactors, discover period equipment, and experience what life was like for the soldiers and citizens caught in the panic.
Live Period Music: Enjoy the rousing sounds of the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment Band, performing live historic music throughout the day as you tour the camp.
Family-Friendly History: A immersive experience for history buffs, families, and curious visitors alike.
Come immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of 1863 and see how Railroad City rallied during one of the pivotal moments of the Civil War. We can’t wait to see you there!
Admission: Included with regular Museum admission! No extra tickets required—just purchase your general admission at the door or show your member pass.
This event is included with admission to the Museum. You can purchase tickets in advance at https://railroadcity.org/admission.
