Cinema Resistenza: Gaza Nippers: Hope amid devastation
Two young men from Gaza were brought to Australia in 2019 by the Northern Beaches Committee for Palestine to train as surf lifesavers in Manly. On their return to Gaza, they set up a Nippers program along Australian lines and drew up plans to build the first surf lifesaving club in the Middle East. But after one successful season, several of these children and supporting adults have been killed in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
The Nippers programme offers a lifeline, teaching children to swim, surf and find moments of joy. Amid the horrors of genocide in Gaza, the film highlights the shocking loss of young lives in the programme.
Growing up under siege, these young surf lifesavers find freedom and joy in the waves - even as they face unimaginable loss. Through their eyes, we witness a Gaza rarely seen: full of courage, community and the enduring spirit of childhood.
