In Christopher Guest’s uproarious mockumentary, Guest assembles a mix of returning collaborators and future ensemble regulars - including Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Jennifer Coolidge, Michael Hitchcock, Jane Lynch, Michael McKean, and Bob Balaban—for a hilarious and sharply observed “dogumentary” set at the prestigious Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. Prissy poodles, droopy-eyed bloodhounds, and neurotic Weimaraners compete for top prize as an eccentric collection of owners primp, pamper, and obsess over their beloved pets. Among the contenders are Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as an anxious yuppie couple hunting for an old flame, Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock as tightly wound dog-obsessed yuppies, and Jennifer Coolidge as a flirtatious trophy wife with a wandering eye. Largely improvised in Guest’s signature style, the film is both an affectionate send-up of competitive dog culture and one of the great ensemble comedies of its era.
