Choice and Control in Supported Accommodation

Andy Sherratt from McArthur Community Care:

After commencing work in the physical disability industry in my early 20’s I was well and truly thrown out of my comfort zone supporting a person with a high-level spinal injury. No initial meet and greet, no training, and no provider / employer support. This career path was something I really needed to jump into or step out, due to the sensitivity of the role, I was completely drawn to the work. It was this situation 36 years ago that ignited a deep desire to create change not only for clients receiving supports, but for those providing supports.

Working with people that had acquired their disability was different to supporting people that had their disability present from birth . My many experiences with people that have acquired their disability was the stepping stone for further studies to understand the grief and loss a person and their family endures. This also fuelled my determination to create a business that provides the supports that meet not only the clients’ individual needs, but the needs of our workforce. I pride myself on creating 2 successful businesses, 1 that was created on my own individual values and experiences and my current role, built on shared values of my employer. Nothing provides me with greater joy than connecting, listening, and deeply understanding the criteria required for people to live their best life despite the situation that has led them to receiving support services, generally, its all about choice and control.

Andy's topic: Choice, control and valuing the workforce.

--

Debbie Atherton from Carer Gateway/Benevolent Society: Challenges of unpaid carers of High Intensity Participants

Debbie's topic:

With a degree in Occupational Therapy, Debbie is passionate about people living their best lives, and living as independently as possible. She has over 30 years experience in the Aged Care and Disability sector. She uses her professional knowledge and experience, and lived experience as a carer to her parents and youngest daughter, to excel in her current role as a Partnership Specialist with Carer Gateway. Her goal is to empower and support carers – the family members and friends who provide care and support for a loved one who has a disability or mental health condition or medical condition or is frail and older.
