About this Event

Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport

The Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport (CWPS) workshop has been created by sportscotland in partnership with Children 1st to refresh and update the content to reflect changes in society and sport and be more relevant for current coaching practice.

Taking a blended learning approach, the main change is the inclusion of an eLearning (Module 1) which is theory-based, followed by a three-hour training course (Module 2) that puts the learning from Module 1 into context and practice.

WHEN BOOKING, PLEASE ENSURE YOU TAKE CARE WHEN ENTERING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, AS INCORRECT SPELLINGS WILL RESULT IN THE CONFIRMATION OF BOOKING EMAIL CONTAINING THE LINK TO COMPULSORY eLEARNING MODULE 1 AND SUBSEQUENT COMMUNICATIONS (including the virtual classroom link) FAILING TO ARRIVE IN YOUR INBOX.

Who should attend

This course is suitable for all adults involved in sports organisations that have participants under the age of 18. It is targeted at all practitioners, ie all coaches and volunteers over the age of 16 working and volunteering directly with children and young people.

Module 1 – eLearning

All learners are required to complete the CWPS eLearning Module 1 which is completed on the sportscotland Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Brightspace Approx. 5-7 days prior to the date of Module 2, you will receive an email from [email protected]

Please follow the instructions in this email to login to Brightspace and complete CWPS Module 1.

If you have not received your login email 5 days before the date of module 2 please check your junk mail/spam in case it has been filtered in there. You should also try going to https://learninginsport.brightspace.com/d2l/login entering the email address you used to register for the CWPS workshop and clicking on forgotten your password and going through that process; please note if you try to use the forgotten password process more than a week before the course it may not work as your profile may not yet have been set up on the system. If you continue to have login issues please use the support portal service on the login page, you will need the date and time of your course as well as who it was organised through.

The aim of the eLearning module is to introduce you to the basic theory, knowledge and practice that underpin child wellbeing and protection in sport and will help you to prepare for the face-to-face element of the training.

By the end of Module 1 you will be able to:

  • Understand what is meant by ‘child wellbeing and protection’
  • Recognise the value of a child-centred approach to child wellbeing and protection
  • Identify good practice in relation to child wellbeing and protection and how this impacts the sports environment
  • Recognise the legislative and policy framework around child wellbeing and protection
  • Identify and respond to possible child wellbeing or protection concerns
  • Identify the limits of your safeguarding role and know when to get support

Module 2 – Virtual Class

The Module 2 workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale signs of abuse and provide you with the tools and confidence to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career.

By the end of Module 2 you will:

  • Be introduced to the Spectrum of Practice and use it to consider, evaluate and respond to common coaching scenarios
  • Receive an introduction to the factors that create a culture of poor practice
  • Identify and recognise good coaching practice and the implications for your coaching
  • Explore your values and feelings in relation to child abuse, and recognise their potential impact on your response
  • Identify barriers to disclosure
  • Cover the process for responding to concerns
  • Put the Responding to Concerns Process into practice to deal with several complex sample cases

What is a virtual classroom?

A virtual classroom is an online learning environment, which is interactive and you can access it from the comfort of your own home. You can see and talk live to the course tutor, other participants, ask questions and view slides/video content. The course will be delivered in the virtual classroom in an interactive style, similar in feel to attending an in-person CWPS workshop. The tutor will lead you through the learning outcomes, providing information, facilitating discussions for the whole group and managing small breakout groups.

How does it work?

You will need access to a computer (desktop/laptop) or a tablet and a good internet connection, some smartphones can also connect. Once you register for the course, you will receive an email with joining instructions that contains a web-link that you click which will allow you to enter the virtual classroom and enjoy the course.
