BayGeo's Intermediate Python for GIS (Fall 2024)

By completing this workshop, students will learn more advanced techniques for process automation and analysis using ESRI products. They will incorporate additional Python libraries into their scripts and have an introduction to Web GIS with ArcGIS Online and the ArcGIS API for Python.

Session 1

• Set up our work environment and review the use of python notebooks within ArcGIS Pro.
• Briefly review data types and other basic python functionality
• Introduce OS module for dealing with local file paths
• Introduce the csv module and Reading/Writing files in python
• Go through sample python problems for the above material

Session 2

• Review ArcPy basics and typical python GIS workflows
• Introduce ArcPy cursors for accessing data within feature classes
• Go through sample python problems for the above materials

Session 3

• Brief introduction to ArcGIS Online
• Introduce ArcGIS API for Python
• Demo of Web GIS scripting
• Describe interacting with AGOL Datatypes – Feature Layers, Features, and FeatureSets
• Students upload GIS data to AGOL and manipulate the data using ArcGIS API for Python

Sessions 4 and 5

• Introduce Pandas
• Data Exploration with Pandas
• How to use Pandas on ArcGIS Pro feature classes
• Sample python problems with Pandas

A temporary license of ArcGIS Pro (along with a temporary ArcGIS Online account) will be provided to registered students for use during this workshop, and a few weeks thereafter.

• Wednesday, November 20 (5:30 - 8:00 p.m.)
• Monday, November 25 (1 hour review session: 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.)

Eric Samson is a Senior GIS Consultant at G2 Integrated Solutions. He is originally from Maine and is currently living in Walnut Creek. Eric has been working with GIS technology for 7 years, starting out in climate science and remote sensing. He now works in the utility industry, improving GIS workflows through python programming. He is passionate about cartography, clean code, skiing, and backpacking.
