SESSION 1: Does AI Have a Place in the Counseling Field? Ethical Implications
Presented by: Amy Moor, LPC
The world is growing fast and AI is playing a large role in this growth. Our field is included in this transition as well. Together we will explore what AI can be used in the counseling world, the benefits and consequences to this technology, as well as explore the ethics around it's use.
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify AI solutions available to counselors.
2. Understand the pro's and con's of AI in the counseling field.
3. Describe the ethical considerations associated with AI use in counseling.
Originally from New York, Amy Moor came to the Shoals area after graduating from Lander University in South Carolina. She originally wanted to pursue a political science career, but that changed during her employment with Residence Life at the University of North Alabama. She earned her Master of Arts in Community Counseling in December of 2010, and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2013. Amy began her counseling career as a substance abuse counselor and then worked with adolescents in a residential outdoor program. She has also worked for an outpatient psychiatric clinic. She is currently in private practice with Rennaisance Mind and Body, LLC.
Amy has had the privilege of presenting multiple times at the Alabama Counseling Association Conference. She was also interviewed twice on the podcast On Air with Elk River. Amy enjoys connecting with others and sharing experiences.
SESSION 2: Ethical Considerations in Counseling Victims and Perpetrators of Domestic Violence
Presented by: Sarah Cabler, LPC-S
This course will take a look at the ethical component of treating clients who have experienced domestic violence from varying vantage points. We will address ways to navigate these challenges safely and effectively in a clinical setting.
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify at least 3 common ethical concerns that arise in session when working with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.
2. Identify special concerns relating to common ethical components of treatment: such as confidentiality & client autonomy.
3. Describe the implications and importance of ethical diagnosis when working with victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.
Sarah Cabler is a licensed professional counselor and an ABEC approved supervising counselor. With over a decade of experience, Sarah works primarily with adults and adolescents. Sarah spent seven years working with children suffering from mental illness and behavioral disorders, prior to specializing in recovery from family related traumas. She has also provided services as a facilitator for domestic violence offender intervention programs. Sarah is certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) and trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as well as other modalities. An experienced presenter, Sarah works to educate professionals and members of the community on a variety of topics related to trauma and mental health while also managing her own private practice.
SESSION 3: [TBD]
SESSION 4: Counseling Ethics 101: Ethical Considerations and A Lesson on Self Care
Presented by: Kellie Bullard, LPC
Counseling is a profession that requires practitioners to adhere to strict ethical guidelines to ensure the well-being of clients and clinicians. The dignity and rights of clients must always be upheld to the highest. Counselors equally need to adhere to ethical guidelines for themselves regarding integrity of self and the profession. This session will focus on ethical concerns that occur on a regular basis within the counseling practice. Although ethical guidelines are in place it is impossible to cover every possible dilemma that may occur. In this session we will explore ways to manage ethical dilemmas and feel confident in that management. We will discuss openly the true meaning of dignity and welfare of clients, influence versus exploitation, the many different types of dual relationships in communities, and self care that must be implemented to protect clients, counselors, and the profession’s integrity.
Participants will be able to:
1. Define numerous types of dual relationships.
2. Establish a protocol for handling ethical dilemmas.
3. Create an individualized self care plan.
Kellie Bullard is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in History and a minor in Women’s Studies in 2005. Kellie continued her education and received a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of North Alabama in 2012. She also received an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Alabama in 2017. She has worked as a counselor for agencies as well as in private practice. Kellie has worked in outreach services such as serious mental illness and has experience in rehabilitation services for those receiving treatment for addiction. Kellie has worked with children, adolescents, couples, and family therapy while in private practice. Kellie is now taking new patients at our outpatient clinic.
