Chess Makers Lab: Design & Play
Ages 6–18
In Chess Makers Lab: Design & Play, students combine creativity, design, engineering, and strategic thinking by creating their own custom chess sets and learning how to play the game. Participants will explore the history and mechanics of chess while designing unique chess pieces, boards, and themes inspired by their imagination, favorite stories, cultures, or engineering concepts.
Students will use design-thinking skills to create and customize chess pieces, learn the rules and strategies of chess, and participate in friendly games and challenges. Through this hands-on experience, participants develop creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and strategic planning skills.
What Students Will Learn

- Basic modeling and prototyping concepts

- Presentation and gameplay skills
Final Project
Students will design and present a custom chess set or chess-themed creation and participate in chess games that showcase their understanding of strategy and gameplay.
Registration Requirement
This program is open to students ages 6–18.
The only requirement to participate is obtaining a Member Card. Students must complete the Member Card registration using the link below before attending the workshop.
