This short film shares the journey of Warren Hallet, a gay man from Malaysia. Warren was the first person to become a refugee in the UK on the grounds of his sexual orientation. The film covers outing, disownment, and the quest for acceptance. Warren joins us in person to answer questions about the film: the life he has built in England over the last 33 years and his work helping other refugees and asylum seekers and for the home office. He will be joined by staff from Gloucestershire Action for Refugee Action (GARAS) who support LGBTQ+ people with their applications for asylum. Zariq Rosita Hanif, an artist, performer and a trans woman from Malaysia, will close the evening, sharing folklore, personal accounts and difficult facts faced by the Transgender community in Malaysia. Film night is hosted by Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees. We are a local charity making sure refugee families and asylum seekers in Cheltenham are supported from the moment they move in. www.
