In 2024 the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage in the US that continues to persist. In addition to being critical for sickle cell patients, who are overwhelmingly African American, it also affects those who require life saving transfusions due to trauma. It is essential that the blood they receive be the most compatible match possible, which generally comes from someone of the same race or similar ethnicity.
