About this Event

To celebrate the groundswell of support for neighbourhood retail and to thank you, the public, for your enthusiastic participation in the civic process, we are hosting a free screening of the documentary Changing Lanes, right in Toronto's City Hall chambers! Changing Lanes documents the collision of planning and politics as a grassroots movement to redesign Brooklyn’s notoriously dangerous McGuinness Blvd hits resistance and roadblocks. Despite a different setting and a different issue, the conversations the movie prompts about how we discuss change within urban environments are highly relevant to Toronto; you may just see a reflection of yourself or an issue you care about on screen.

So join us for a movie night and nerd out about municipal civic participation in the place where the magic happens!

About Changing Lanes

"When a beloved teacher is tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a grassroots movement emerges to transform a notoriously dangerous four-lane boulevard into a safer, two-lane street with protected bike lanes. While many applaud the proposed road diet, it also sparks a backlash — led in part by a powerful local business owner. As government support begins to waver, neighbors unite to challenge entrenched interests and fight for a safer Greenpoint.

The film situates this local struggle within broader historical, environmental, political, and social contexts through interviews with politicians, activists, urban planners, entrepreneurs, and cultural icons including David Byrne and Janette Sadik-Khan. Changing Lanes makes a compelling call to action for democracy at street level."
