The workshop will start at Fort Widley with a talk which will take you on a trip through the chalk of Portsdown and its importance to chalk geology. Then we will have a 20min walk to Candy's Pit to see examples in that quarry. Come prepared whatever the weather!
The chalk of Portsdown Hill, exposed in disused quarries, provides remarkable insights into the warm Greenhouse world of the Late Cretaceous. Here, about 80 million years ago, the tranquil sea floor was transformed by erosion of a deep channel, the sides of which slumped, with huge masses of chalk forming submarine landslides. Eventually, the structures were buried and peaceful sedimentation returned.
Andy Gale is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Portsmouth and a Research Associate of the Natural history Museum, London.
