Be prepared to serve your church and community following a hurricane or other natural disaster. This two-day training will introduce volunteers to the safe operation of chainsaws and the teamwork required for storm cleanup and debris removal.
Friday Evening: Safety and Chainsaw Basics (6-8:30pm)
Bruce Cullen, MNA Disaster Response Specialist for Florida, and his team will lead an interactive, hands-on introduction to:
- Personal protective equipment and essential safety practices
- Chainsaw components and basic operation
- Assembling and disassembling a chainsaw
- Removing, installing, and properly adjusting a chain
- Identifying common chainsaw problems
- Recognizing kickback and other potential hazards
- Working safely as part of a disaster-response team
Saturday Morning: Field Practice (8am-12:00 noon)
On Saturday, participants will travel approximately one mile from Willow Creek Church to a wooded practice area. Under the supervision of Bruce and his experienced team members, participants will practice:
- Assessing a work area before beginning
- Identifying damaged trees, unstable limbs, and other hazards
- Planning cuts and maintaining a safe working distance
- Recognizing tension and compression in limbs and logs
- Basic cutting, limbing, and brush-removal techniques
- Working together safely and efficiently as a chainsaw team
Chainsaw work includes removing damaged trees, cutting and moving limbs, clearing brush, rope rigging, and supporting other disaster-response efforts.
