Ceramic 101
About this Event
Never done ceramic before, but feel passionate to start?
No experience? No worries! We got you covered with our monthly 6 hours "Ceramic 101" courses!
This "Ceramic 101" course is designed to give you a jump start to explore the world of pottery with playful intention.
For 3 weeks, and 2 hours per week (Saturday 10:00-12:00), we will gather together in the studio before your Saturday afternoon hangout, learning some basic ceramic skills that you need to start your ceramic journey, as well as little pinch of nerdy ceramic theories, to back you up when "clay doing its own thing".
In those 6 hours, we would like to go through those questions with you, involving samples and hands-on practice:
Class 1 Overview Material & techniques
- Soil, Clay, Ceramic, What are we talking about anyway?
- How do we choose clay? How to read the label? Where to find them?
- Start without a pottery wheel? What are the possibilities of handbuild techniques?
Class 2 Duplication
- How do we duplicate our work?
- How does mould work? What is slipcasting?
- What are the possibilities and limitations?
Class 3 Glazing & Firing
- What is glaze? How do we choose and work with commercial glaze?
- Safety about working with clay and glaze? What should we pay attention to?
- What do we mean when "firing a piece of ceramic"?
- How do you plan out your next ceramic project?
During the course, to help you practice the hands-on techniques, we offer each students 3 times "open making" on Wednesday evenings for free. It's not mandatory to attend, but of course, it's a very good opportunity to start your own project!
