Jordan English is Assistant Organist of St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, and is recognised for his performances of the French symphonic repertoire and the art of improvisation. He accompanies the cathedral choir for all services, tours, recordings, and national ceremonial occasions, and appears regularly in recital throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
After early musical training as a chorister at Carlisle Cathedral, where he later returned as Organ Scholar, Jordan studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, graduating as a prize-winning undergraduate. There he worked with Jeffrey Makinson and Thomas Trotter before undertaking postgraduate study at the Royal College of Music in London. His studies focused particularly on the French symphonic tradition and the music of Marcel Dupré and Jehan Alain under the guidance of Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin and Professor David Graham. A Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, he continues advanced private study in improvisation with Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin in Paris.
Alongside his liturgical work, Jordan maintains an active performing career. His playing is especially associated with the French improvisatory tradition and the great symphonic repertoire of the twentieth century. He has also given world premiere performances of works by Paul Mealor and Sir James MacMillan.
Jordan is also a regular broadcaster with the BBC, appearing frequently on radio and television through his work with the Choir of St Giles’ Cathedral. In addition, he performs continuo for the choir’s annual candlelight concert during Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations.
Recent State and Royal occasions have included performances for the Scottish national service following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, and for King Charles III during the Honours of Scotland ceremony at St Giles’ Cathedral in July 2023.
Upcoming engagements include recitals at Westminster Abbey, together with further appearances in Belgium, France and Estonia.
