Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Victorian Charter

About the event

The Victorian Chapter of the International Law Association (ILA) and the Human Rights Law Association (HRLA) are hosting a panel discussion to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic), generously sponsored by Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

The panel will comprise:

• Ramona Thambiratnam, a lawyer from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission;
• Sarah Castles, a Principal Legal Adviser from the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office human rights team;
• Prof. John Tobin from Melbourne Law School, an expert in international human rights law; and
• Peter Reading, a human rights lawyer who has worked in Hong Kong and the UK.

The panel will all speak to their expertise in human rights law and the Charter. There will be general questions posed to the panel about the role of the Charter in upholding human rights in Victoria and some discussion about the links between the Charter and international human rights law (including its origins and jurisprudence).

About the hosts

The ILA is a not for profit focused on encouraging the practice and study of international law and the Victorian welcomes attendees for this event who are students, lawyers, and all those interested in international law.

The HRLA also a not for profit with a focus on providing a forum for the exchange of knowledge and information between practitioners, teachers and other people interested in human rights law.
