CLASSES
Class 1: Juke Joints and Ballrooms: 12:15 - 1:15 pm
In this class we'll explore the similarities and differences among Jukin’ and Ballroomin’ dances and the music they grew up alongside, and how these different dances/movements, or Blues Idiom Dances, are part of the broader Jazz-Blues continuum. The class will include both lots of "how to's", and lots about "how to listen".
Class 2: Close Embrace But Make it Gooder 1:30 - 2:30 pm
Ok, sure… you can do close embrace and it works. But can you travel around the dance floor effortlessly? Is your close embrace art yet? Could it be…. Better? What’s holding you back? Come geek out and make your close embrace something to behold - pun fully intended.
Class 3: Momentum and Stretch/Compression in Ballroomin’ Dances 3:00 - 4:00 pm
While close embrace is a foundational part of Blues idiom dances, it's not the only skill we need to be fantastic dancers. Ballroomin' dances also require excellent technique and partnership to use "momentum" and "stretch/compression" effectively. In this hour we'll focus on the role of momentum during linear and rotational redirections, and try to level up from "just functional" to "wheeeeee!"
Class 4: Interdependence vs Codependence vs Independence 4:15 - 5:15 pm
You can't partner-dance alone. By its very definition, what we do relies on our partners. But not all forms of reliance are equal - or equally applicable to Blues. Our concept of an ideal partnership in Blues requires both dancers trusting and relying on one another, all while still enthusiastically contributing to the dance. In this class we'll go into detail about how we develop this kind of Interdependence, as opposed to becoming Independent or Codependent.
