CAVE HILL WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE UNITED IRISHMEN
About this Event
Saturday 18 July
2.00pm to 5.00 pm.
Booking essential
Starting at Belfast Castle we will climb Cave Hill with a commentary from John Gray.
Cave Hill lay at the heart of radical and United Irish activities from the 1770’s until the 1798 rebellion.
Here the Hearts of Steel resisted the rack-renting activities of the absentee landlord, Lord Donegall.
Here the Volunteers engaged in manoeuvres and lent their name to the Volunteer Well.
Here the United Irishmen celebrated Bastille Day when it was no longer possible to do so in Belfast.
Here Henry Joy McCracken carried on his romance with Mary Bodel.
Here the United Irishmen swore ‘never to desist until they had freed Ireland from English tyranny.’
Here McCracken, James Hope and others hid out after the United Irish defeat at the Battle of Antrim.
It was from here that Henry Joy McCracken embarked on his ill-fated attempt to escape via Carrickfergus.
This walk involves a considerable ascent and participants should come equipped for hill walking.
This a free event however a donation would be very much appreciated. Donation of over £10 secures yearly membership of RTE.
