Cathy Coleman, editor of the book "Ralph Metzner, Explorer of Consciousness: The Life and Legacy of a Psychedelic Pioneer", will be at Readers' Books on Wednesday, February 5th. There will be a 5:30 reception, followed by the 6 p.m. reading. This remarkable collection brings together a series of academic colleagues and a who's who of fellow psychedelic researchers to share stories from their work with Ralph. Together, they illuminate his depth of knowledge and broad impact, painting a complete portrait of a life as an intrepid explorer of consciousness until the very end of life.
Renowned as a pioneering psychologist, psychedelic elder, alchemical explorer, and shamanic teacher, the late Ralph Metzner (1936 - 2019) contributed profoundly to consciousness research, transpersonal psychology, and contemporary psychedelic studies across his more than fifty year career. This collection explores his life from his childhood, his time at Harvard with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), his work with Agni Yoga and transpersonal psychology, his development of ecopsychology, and his in-depth psychedelic research.
Ralph touched the lives of those around him in extraordinary ways, recasting people's worldviews leading to personal growth and spiritual transformation. His mystical work exploring prenatal realms of consciousness and channeling, as well as his healing and transformative "Vision Circles" had a profound impact on both his field and the individuals he worked with.
Contributors include Rick Doblin, Charles S. Grob, Stan Grof, Stanley Krippner, Dennis McKenna, the late Christian Rätsch, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Claudia Mueller-Ebeling, Dorothy Fadiman and Luis Eduardo Luna. Edited and introduced by Cathy Coleman, Ralph's wife of thirty-one years, the book chronicles the vast impact of Ralph Metzner's healing therapies and wisdom on colleagues, students, clients, and the field in which he worked.
Cathy Coleman, Ph.D., was a dean of students at California Institute of Integral Studies, president of Kepler College, and director of IONS' EarthRise Retreat Center. She lives in Sonoma, California.
