Catharine Cary at Meetinghouse Arts

AIR CAKE and other summery occupations is a performance of nine frolicky stories about three intrepid children on the summer beaches of Southwest France, on the other side of the Atlantic from fabulous Maine. It is live storytelling set to music.

Meetinghouse Arts is thrilled beyond all belief that Catharine Cary will get off a plane from France and land on our stage on December 13th with AIR CAKE and other summery occupations. OK, it’s mid winter and we are worrying about Santa Claus rather than beachcombing, but what better time to let our imagination wander back to last summer or on to the one ahead to remember what it means to be a kid on an Atlantic beach with so much, and ultimately so little, to actually do.

Catharine Cary, an American artist living in France since forever, spent one of many lockdowns on an Atlantic Beach, but on the other side of the ocean from our beloved Maine. In the Basque Country of Southwest France, each day she recorded a story for her great niece and nephew, using her iPhone, in the wind and in the rain, and sent them off. One day she shared one with her song teacher, who was also a record producer, who said, "ooh, these are good, let’s make an album."

And so they did. Collaborating with improvising musicians Ivan Bamford and Eric Lewis, in August of 2023, they entered into the acclaimed Hotel 2 Tango recording studio in Montreal and out came AIR CAKE and other summery occupations. This audio album launched by the female owned label Orchard of Pomegranates, came out to critical acclaim in June 2024. This summer is the second tour of Catharine in Maine, continuing to spread the silliness and intrepidity of 3 independent kids on a beach and all around, surrounded by animals of all sorts, and water in all its states.
