This talk will share my practice-based PhD research which explores people, plants and gardens, through collaborative and sustainable arts practice. My enquiry makes manifest the idea of gardening communities as spaces that are inhabited by multiple participants (humans, plants, animals, insects, fungi) and whose unique ecological and cultural connectivity render them vital for our personal wellbeing and as agents on the front line of the urgent political-green struggle. Visualising gardening communities through a critical multimedia practice, this research has utilised photography, writing, gardening, and participatory practice focussed through the lens of autoethnography. The research breaks new ground in developing a form of ‘auto-ethnographic photographic practice’ which utilises the experience of the artist/photographer to share the narratives of five gardens and their inhabitants, engaging them as sites for practice and discovery.
