In anticipation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Tribute scheduled at Act II Playhouse this summer, we are thrilled to bring this classic musical to our big screen for the first time in over 50 years! 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: Released a year after they co-starred in OKLAHOMA, Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae are together again in this beloved musical about a doomed romance between a philandering carnival barker and a sweet small town girl. After going down the wrong path leading to his demise, a deceased husband gets the opportunity to return to earth for one day to check in on his loved ones. This vibrant, heart-wrenching story spans heaven and earth, featuring more than 15 songs penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein including “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” as well as one of the most iconic dream ballet sequences ever to hit the big screen.
Warning to the Viewer. This film is a product of its time. It depicts gender stereotypes and scenes of domestic violence that may be triggering to the viewer. These depictions of violence were wrong then and are wrong now. The harmful depictions in this work do not represent the values of our nonprofit theater. We elected to present the film as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming the stereotypes and reprehensible acts never existed. We acknowledge the film’s harmful impact and hope it can serve as an educational tool to spark a conversation and raise awareness about the outdated cultural depictions in classic cinema with modern viewers.
