Carolina Celtic Brian Dooley & Mooncoin
Brian Dooley is a guitarist, whistle player, smallpiper, and Highland piper whose music draws from Celtic traditions, fingerstyle guitar, and classical influences. An Irish family heritage and a lifelong involvement in piping have shaped his approach to traditional music, including earning recognition as a Grade 2 North American Highland piping champion. Alongside his work on pipes and whistles, Brian has studied and performed with guitarist Kinloch Nelson, exploring connections between classical repertoire, fingerstyle guitar, and Celtic music. He has performed at festivals, colleges, and music gatherings, sharing traditional music in a variety of settings. Brian holds a doctorate in music from the Eastman School of Music.
Mooncoin is an Asheville-based band representing a new generation of musicians following the old paths of traditional music. Featuring Joseph Marino (flute and whistles), Duncan Hardee (bouzouki and tenor banjo), Brian Dooley (smallpipes, whistle, and guitar), and Shelby Hodge (bodhrán), their sound blends traditional ballads with lively dance tunes from Ireland, Scotland, and beyond, bringing both energy and heart to the stage. Drawing from a shared love of traditional song and instrumental music, the band balances respect for the source material with a fresh and engaging performance style. Recent appearances include LEAF Festival, Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival, Carolina Celtic Music Festival, Asheville Music Hall, and Jack of the Wood. Mooncoin offers a spirited celebration of the music, stories, and traditions of the Celtic world.
