Care and Climate Change: A Conceptual Framework

On October 31, 2024, join the Centre for Global Social Policy as we host the first edition of our Care Economies in Context speaker series: Shawn Marshall (Chief Scientific Officer at Environment and Climate Change Canada) in conversation with Ito Peng (Professor of Sociology and Canada Research Chair in Global Social Policy, and director of CGSP).

At the same time as climate change is causing environmental, social and economic disruptions around the globe, demographic and cultural shifts are causing an acute shortage in care. Drs Marshall and Peng will discuss the ways in which these two crises affect each other – how care work impacts the climate, and how climate change impacts the people who perform care work – whether they do the work as unpaid family members or they are employed in care sectors. Understanding the intersection of care and climate change is integral to finding policy solutions for the care crisis that are climate friendly, and assuring that the climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies do not contribute to exacerbating the care burden borne most often by women and felt most intensely by marginalized women.
