About this Event
Mestre Dinho Nascimento is an instrumentalist and capoeirista from Salvador, Bahia who has over 50 years of experience as a percussionist, singer, and composer. He is an innovator in the Brazilian music scene with recordings including: “Berimbau Blues,” “Gongolô,” and "Ser Hum Mano." His inspiration stems from Afro-Brazilian manifestations of culture like Capoeira, Samba de Roda, and a variety of other native music. The harmonies of the berimbau (a bowed percussion instrument) guide his compositions, giving them his unique signature. Some of the other instruments Mestre Dinho plays are congas, kalimba, talk-drums, lôla, gaita, tambor de língua, djambé and ashiko. Mestre Dinho is an acclaimed and recognized musician, nationally and internationally, and has performed alongside numerous notable Brazilian, American, and African artists. Mestre Dinho's son João, a versatile instrumentalist and researcher of Afro-Brazilian culture, joins him for this show.
Special guests include Mestre Acordeon (Bira Almeida). An icon in his field, Mestre Acordeon has recorded numerous CDs, and is internationally known for his music and teaching of Capoeira. Mestre Acordeon is the founder of the Capoeira Arts Foundation (CAF). CAF is a non-profit 501(c)3 with the goal of bringing together capoeira practitioners, teachers / students of different schools (locally and internationally); to preserve the roots of the art form, and other related Afro-brazilian art forms; and to present and sponsor cultural events, performances, publications, musical recordings, and documentary films. CAF works in collaboration with similar organizations and individuals to participate in an ongoing dialogue of ideas and projects that challenge and bring out the best in all of us.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door general admission; $20 for students/low-income individuals. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available here, or if the show is not sold out, you may purchase your tickets at the door before the show.
