The AfPP Regional Conference in Cambridge on Saturday 16 May 2026 supports you to strengthen patient safety, improve team dynamics and build confidence in your role. Interactive elements, including a roundtable workshop and panel discussion, providing a space to reflect, share experiences and learn from peers.

Sessions are delivered by experienced speakers who understand the realities of working in theatres, using real-world examples and aligning with current national standards and expectations.

The event will enable you to take ideas straight back into practice and strengthen patient safety and care.

Info: This session explores how artificial intelligence is transforming operating theatres from a surgeon’s perspective, with a focus on theatre efficiency. It will examine how AI‑driven systems support clinical decision‑making, workflow optimisation, and resource utilisation within complex operating environments. Attendees will gain insight into current and emerging applications of AI in theatres, the development of AI‑enabled operating environments, and the wider role of AI in improving patient safety, efficiency, multidisciplinary working, and outcomes across the perioperative pathway and healthcare system. Info: Tristel’s presentation will look at choosing manual action and having confidence in your decontamination procedure. It will go through the process, steps involved and key considerations when it comes to your decontamination procedure. It will also touch upon which method is best practice when it comes to decontamination. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Define decontamination and its role in infection control.
2. Explain microbiocidal efficacy and why it matters.
3. Describe AMR and its impact.

Session 2: Implementing the Behaviour Charter
Host: Jennifer Maher

Info: The AfPP Behaviours Charter defines values that underpin safe, respectful, and collaborative perioperative practice. This session explores what the Charter is, its purpose, principles, and expectations for behaviour. Why it matters, how civility, accountability, and inclusion directly impact safety and well-being. And how it can be embedded into daily theatre culture. We will discuss practical approaches to integrating the Charter, ensuring it becomes more than words on a wall, and applying it as a practical step towards building safer perioperative teams. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Understand the purpose and key principles of the AfPP Behaviours Charter.
2. Recognise how positive behaviours - such as civility, accountability, and inclusion - support safety and well-being in theatres.
3. Identify practical ways to embed the Charter into everyday perioperative practice.

Session 3: Sexual Safety: The Conversations We Can’t Afford to Avoid
Host: Prof. Rosalind Searle, PhD. MBA

Info: Drawing from the latest science this session examines sexual harassment and abuse (SHA) from doctors. Applying a preventative medicine model, Prof Searle explains the need for a different approach to understanding and tackling SHA in medicine. She argues these forms of behaviour are different from other types of professional misconduct. She outlines the social, cultural and institutional factors that need far greater attention. She examines the costs not just of their targets but also to the wider workplace from these toxic behaviours on patient safety, and workforces.

Info: This session explores the harmful impact of workplace bullying and harassment on individuals and organisations. It emphasizes the importance of assertiveness in dealing with these issues. By reflecting on personal experiences it will explore practicing assertiveness, individuals can establish boundaries, voice concerns, and effectively address bullying and harassment, leading to a more respectful and healthier work environment.
