Join us for a spectacular beginner rock scramble on Calico One.
This hike will be about 3 hrs of easy class 2 and 3 rock scrambling. There's little to no risk of falling, we'll seldom get more than a few feet above ground level. Slow pace, short breaks as needed.
You don't need any scrambling experience to attend, but you should be able to comfortably hike 3+ miles, some of it on steep rocky terrain. You will sometimes be required to use your hands to climb up and over easy obstacles.
For those ready for more challenging climbing, there are several optional route sections along the way.
Maybe 600' elevation gain and 2.5 miles.
Plan to arrive 10 minutes early so we're all ready to start at 8 am. Meet at the Red Spring picnic tables, see the map. Don't go by the GPS coordinates, google 'Red Spring Picnic Area, Nevada' if you've never been there.
You'll need a backpack so that your hands are free. You'll need at least a liter of water, in metal or plastic containers, no glass. A backpack with a water bladder is the most convenient. Bring a light snack that provides quick energy.
You'll need sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and shoes with good grip or 'sticky' on sandstone. Approach shoes are best, hiking shoes are okay. Sneakers are not recommended, they're usually too pliable for rock scrambling.
Everyone will be asked to sign our liability release, one time only. I'll bring paper copies to the hike.
