Join writer and broadcaster Stuart Cosgrove plus the Calesoul residents at Beech Avenue Social Club, Glasgow, for an evening of words and music to mark the much-anticipated publication of 'Caledonia Soul: How Scotland helped shape northern soul'.
For the first part of the evening Stuart talks to author Martin Gavin about the years of research behind the book – the interviews gathered across Scotland, archives discovered, unique memorabilia revealed and history preserved. The result is a richly detailed account of how Black American music travelled across the Atlantic in the post-war era uniting communities divided by gang loyalties, politics and religion to reshape fashion, nightlife and popular culture.
Hear memories relived from those who were there about the fizzing R&B scene of the early 1960s, Scotland's first northern soul events or young soul boys and girls heading south with little more than a holdall and an advert clipped from Blues & Soul magazine.
The book launch gives way to a Caledoniasoul club night, carrying the celebration onto the dancefloor until 11pm. Stuart Cosgrove joins residents Lenny Harkins and Michael Higgins on the decks for a five-hour journey through the records and shared experiences at the heart of the book. Also appearing will be the publication’s art director and designer, Andrew Divine – a 100% northern soul set from one of Glasgow’s most consistent and best loved DJs and record collectors. Get your ticket early, guaranteed sell out event.
