About this Event

The route: Clapham Junction to Mayfield Lavender Farm.

We will be cycling from Clapham Junction Station in London to the Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey. The farm has 25 acres of lavender and is absolutely stunning. Entry into the fields was £5 last year (2024 price needs to be confirmed).

Difficulty: Warmer ride (10+ to 22 miles). Intermediate riders and aspiring beginners. Looking to warm up their skills and amplify their cycling experience. Pace and hills may appear.

Meeting point:

Meet outside Clapham Junction station - Sainsbury's

The cycle route:

Check out the route here and determine if this ride is for you.

Rental bikes:

Rental bikes such as Santander Cycle bikes are not be suitable for this route as there are no docking stations in the Mayfield Farm. If you decide to bring a rental bike, it will be your responsibility to obtain a bike well before the beginning of our start time.

Lunch:

If the weather holds up, we're going to break for some chit chat, food and drinks at the Mayfield Lavender farm.

There is a Cafe at the farm so we will be able to buy food and drink from there. Please note, we will not be providing food and drink and food is not permitted to be brought onto the farm.

Bike parking:

Bike parking is available at the farm for 20 bikes. Please bring a lock to secure your bike.

Return route:

The method of return in entirely up to you. Some people will likely cycle back making this into a longer cycle ending at Clapham Junction. Alternatively, feel free to take the train back. There are multiple near by stations within a short cycle distance, such as Carshalton Beeches (8 min cycle), Belmont (11 min cycle) and Wallington (15 min cycle). From any of these stations you can get trains terminating at London Victoria.

Can I come to Black Women On Wheels?

As the name suggests, this is a safe space for Black/Mixed Race cis and trans women of Black African and / or Caribbean descent. We are not a BAME, POC, BIPOC, WOC, Politically Black or Ally organisation.

Other details

Punctures can happen on any ride so please come prepared with the kit to repair a puncture on your bike, such as a spare inner tube. Even if you're not sure how to repair one, someone in the group should be able to help.

We will be taking pictures and videos on the day and using them for our social media campaign. Please let us know if you would like to opt-out of a picture or video being taken of you and or it being posted on social media.

Participation in rides is voluntary and up to the discretion of the individual. Please ride safely and obey traffic laws. Black Women On Wheels is not liable for any injuries that may occur as a result of joining a group ride.

About the group

Welcome to the sisterhood! We are Black Women On Wheels (BWOW), a cycling group for Black women with a difference. Our focus is fun, laughter and joy, while riding our bikes.

The group started in April 2021 and we ride out 2 times a month, rotating between North, East, South and West London.

As a community of Black women, we empower each other to ride our bikes, while assisting with issues specific to Black women such as haircare while cycling.

It does not matter if you are a complete beginner, a cycle commuter or an advanced rider. Whatever your level, this is the group for you! Join our sisterhood so we can thrive together!

Be Bold, Be You, BWOW!
