About this Event
Our day begins at 10.00am with a 50‑minute guided tour of Cardiff Castle, followed by a further hour to explore its interior and exterior at leisure. This allows time to appreciate both the castle’s exuberant Victorian Gothic interiors by William Burges and the earlier Georgian remodelling of the mansion house, at your own pace. For the sure‑footed, there is also the opportunity to climb the medieval keep and enjoy its dramatic views—vertiginous stairs very much included.
We then continue on foot to the nearby St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral, designed by P.P. Pugin and opened in 1888. Although severely damaged during the Second World War, the cathedral was subsequently rebuilt and remains a powerful testament to Pugin’s ecclesiastical vision and Cardiff’s Gothic paradise.
After free time for lunch, we take a taxi north to Castell Coch, the Marquess of Bute’s other great Burges creation in Cardiff, spectacularly embedded in its wooded hillside setting. We allow 90 minutes to explore this extraordinary essay in High Victorian Gothic before returning to central Cardiff, aiming to arrive back by 4.00pm.
